After a few failed attempts trying to go to NY Nobu locations, I finally made it in Waikiki.

We opted for the $150 omakase menu. With the huge menu that they have it is a good way to try multiple dishes and also be introduced to new dishes that I wouldn’t have ordered.

They offer three levels of omakase. $90, $110 and special. Each one them 7 courses but each level has a more expensive selection of food.

Our dinner started with a berry, a tartar and a small sashimi spring roll. The tartar had caviar on top and was totally delicious. Probably the highlight of the meal for me.

Next course was a sashimi course, scallop [ good, lots of acid ], a fish roll [ alright ], and a fish on a endive leaf [ good ].

The next course was a salmon salad with crispy salmon skin and seared salmon sashimi. I’m not one for fish skin, but this was delicious. More than the salmon. I guess because with the salmon I was expecting sashimi but then it had a crusty edge.

Onto the mains, the first main was a half lobster. Baked and drizzled with truffle oil. Totally delicious, not too rich and beautiful presentation.

The second main was a Wagyu beef with foie gras on top. Honestly, I know the Wagyu beef was probably part of the more expensive price but Wagyu tastes like normal steak for me. Kobe is where it’s at for a pricier option with a more distinct taste.

Next course was the sushi course. A variety of sushi I would never order but all tasted good. Nothing too fishy for me.

And lastly the dessert course. A trio of desserts. A goat cheese cheesecake with black pepper ice cream [ really good ], Nobu shaved ice with ice cream [ refreshing ], and a flourless chocolate cake with candied sesame seeds [ sesame seeds were delicious ].

Overall a good dinner but not as memorable as I would have hoped. Nobu is expensive regularly, and this meal wasn’t any different. It didn’t blow me away and I would have been happier ordering what I normally order at Japanese restaurants, and not walk out so grossly full. Plus it is easier to compare food when you are familiar with the food.

For our fancy dinner in London, we headed to the Two Michelin Star restaurant called The Ledbury in Notting Hill. Only after I’m sitting there am I informed that this is one of Lily Allen’s favourite restaurants…and now probably mine!

We opted for the tasting menu which was 7+ courses. And here we go.

First we had an amuse bouche which was creamed fois gras on these little crispy toasts. If this was to predict how the meal was going to go, it was going to be great.

We were provided with an entire loaf of bread plus they came around with these amazing bacon brioche’s. To die for.

And then the food began…. with another amuse bouche, which we didn’t quite understand because it was bigger than one bite. But it was totally delectable. Raw scallop with some sort of jelly things topped with frozen horseradish. It was amazing, but not much to look at in this picture.

New Potato Risotto with Fried Chicken – This was so good. The risotto was tasty with the mushroom, and the fried chicken was crispy and good!

Lobster in curry spice and brown butter – The lobster was very good.

Hampshire Buffalo Milk Curd with Saint Nectare – Creamy and sweet.

Truffle Toast and a Broth of Grilled Onions – So so so good. But isn’t toast that is toasted with butter in a pan always good?

Roast Turbot with Watercress, Cauliflower and Potted Shrimp Butter – The fish just melted in your mouth.

Pork Cheek with Celeriac in Ash and Hazelnut – So tender and I love hazelnut so this was perfect for me.

On the left, pigeon hart and wing tip. On the right, pigeon legs – The heart and wing tip on skewered on liquorice. I was hesitant and first but popping the entire thing in my mouth was surprisingly good. The legs were delicious also, but bird skin always is.

Pigeon with foie gras and cherries – First time for pigeon and it was quite good. I wasn’t expecting it to be as gamey… almost tasting like a beef.

Pre Dessert – Olive Oil Pana Cotta with Fig – Perfect after the strong flavour of the pigeon.

Caramelised Banana Galette with Salted Caramel, Passion Fruit and Peanut Oil Parfait – This was delicious and the ice cream was melt in your mouth. It wasn’t peanut butter, but peanut oil ice cream.

This was an extra dessert they brought us, chocolate parfait. We couldn’t quite figure out the flavour of the ice cream, and forgot to ask.

Mango Jelly, Cookie and Salted Caramel – Just when we thought we were done!

Overall this meal was memorable, delicious and one of our favourite restaurants to date. It was even mentioned that we may like this restaurant more than we liked… Per Se. The service was wonderful and everyone was very friendly. We were worried because we didn’t “dress” up but we were just fine.

Thanks to our friend Corey who recommended this restaurant after he read this article… but neglected to tell me about the riots at the restaurant.

Last night we dined at Splendido… a restaurant I have been dying to try for quite some time. I definitely wasn’t disappointed.

The service is fantastic, I was expecting that, and the food was damn tasty also. I started with oysters, 3 different ways. 2 x Horseradish, 2x Cucumber Wasabi, 2 x Green Apple Jalapeno. 4 of the six oysters were delicious, 2 of them were just a little too strong for my taste… (I think the ones from PEI).

For my main, I split a share plate. It comes in a large skillet and they separate out the food onto your plate quite beautifully. We had the Lobster, Halibut and Scallops. All were delicious.

For the table we also had some Jerusalem artichokes and Gold Potato Fries with Malt Vinegar Mayonnaise which I could have eaten a bowl of.

Lastly, for dessert, I had Lemon curd which was sort of like a deconstructed lemon pie. Bits of meringue over top of lemon curd with a dollop of ice cream. I could have done without the ice cream but I love something tart for dessert, especially lemon.

Being a regular Earl’s diner in Vancouver, I was curious to check out the Earl’s here in Toronto. The restaurant itself is very pretty and quite a good size. Located in the financial district, I can see it being a busy at lunch and after work. They seem to be building a good sized patio which will be nice.

So I had the Bronx Burger. A huge half pound piece of meat topped with aioli mayo, cheese, and three beer battered onion rings. Two of which I had to remove just to get the burger in my mouth. The burger was great and had a nice spice. I do feel a little weighted down now, but it was worth it. Last complex carb of the week.

My only criticism is that the fries seemed to be a little limp. I can’t remember what they were like in the past, but they seemed a little soggy.

I’m always happy when I go to Sidecar. Not only because I think they have the best Negroni in the city but I’m always very content with the food.

One thing we noticed is that their cocktail list doesn’t contain any vodka based drinks. Strange perhaps, but I for one, like to try new drinks so I welcomed the adventure. I think too many people say they don’t like a certain liquor but don’t give it a chance with all the amazing concoctions out there nowadays. I ordered the Cherry Fizz (cherry infused brandy, dubonnet, lemon and orange juice) and I quite enjoyed it. And I detest cherry flavour normally… unless it is fresh. Anyway, I digress.

I ordered my Sidecar staple, the Sidecar Salad. It is a chop salad (with I think no lettuce), with chopped vegetables, feta cheese, and creamy oregano dressing. It is by far my favourite chopped salad… sorry Mrs. Grubman, even better than L.A.’s Pizzeria Mozza in my humble opinion.

For main, it was a little more understated but I wanted something light, so I had the Pan Seared Halibut. It was on a bed of roasted tomatoes, snap peas, and tomato broth. It was good, no complaints, just not overly memorable.

We like cookies here at Let Us Eat. Actually… we love cookies. And we love giving cookies away to friends and family… keeping our consumption to a healthy minimum. Apparently others like cookies too, especially these guys down in New York City: The Gay Gourmet and Zachary Schmal of Schmackarys Cookies. They are helping others find great cookie recipes so you can make great cookies also! So as a homage to the great cookie and National Cookie Week, we’ll be supporting this initiative by posting a picture a day of cookies that we have baked. Now we aren’t chemists in the kitchen so these aren’t original concoctions, but I’ll let you know where you can get the recipe.
